State “Declaration of Intent” Reminder
Dear Home Educators in Washington,
Christian Heritage wants to remind you that if you are operating a home-based instruction program under the Washington State homeschool law, your annual declaration of intent form is due by September 15. This form may be printed out and mailed to the district public school superintendent as explained later in this reminder.
“Parents are required to submit their declaration of intent to the local superintendent or with the superintendent of a nonresident district which accepts the homeschool student as a transfer student under RCW 28A.225.220.
The law only requires the declaration of intent to include the name and age for the child and indicate if a certificated person will be supervising the instruction. Washington law also requires declaration of intent form to be in the format prescribed by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, but parents are not required to use their local district’s form if it requests additional information (emphasis ours).” *
The Christian Homeschool Network of Washington (CHN), our Christian Heritage legislative liaison organization, has created a declaration of intent form using the format prescribed by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
- We strongly recommend using this form. Download it at: [www.chnow.org].
- Print out the form and fill in only the information included on the form. Make a copy for your own files.
- Mail this form to the Superintendent of Public Schools in your city (address is listed under your city’s name in your phone book).
- We recommend mailing in the form rather than presenting it in person.
If your school district attempts to require you to provide information which they are not entitled to, please report this to CHN by using the “Contact Us” button at the bottom of the www.chnow.org website home page.
* PLEASE NOTE: The quoted information above is from a reminder sent by Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) to their member families. This organization works diligently to serve & inform home educators, defend homeschoolers across the nation from infringement of their legal right to homeschool, and to protect our freedoms to homeschool.
- Christian Heritage highly recommends that each homeschooling family become a member of HSLDA. You may contact them at www.hslda.org.
- And remember, becoming a member of Christian Heritage enables you to receive a $15 discount on your annual HSLDA membership fee as well as helping Christian Heritage to continue serving the home educating families of Washington.
May God bless you with His strength and wisdom as you continue the twenty-four-hour, home-based discipleship of your family for His glory.
