Keynote Speakers and Sessions

Doug Phillips, Esq.

Doug Phillips is the founder and president of Vision Forum, a discipleship and training ministry that emphasizes Christian apologetics, worldview training, multi-generational faithfulness, and the crucial responsibility of fathers in family discipleship. He is a powerful communicator with a heart for home education and the restoration of the Christian family and culture to the glory of God. He is also a teaching elder of Boerne Christian Assembly near San Antonio, Texas. Doug was trained as a constitutional attorney and served for seven years with HSLDA. Most blessedly, he is the husband of Beall and the father of seven children.

  • Homeschool Vision of Victory
If a generation is to rise up and call America back to its biblical foundations, it must surely come from the ranks of America’s homeschoolers. But home education is not an end in itself. It is only a God-ordained means of accomplishing His purposes in the home, in the heart of a young person, and in society as a whole. Doug will discuss the historical significance of the homeschool movement, the true objectives of home education and the importance of a long-term multi-generational vision of victory. This inspirational session is for everyone who needs to be reminded of the beauty and greatness of the homeschool vision.
  • The Promise: The Beauty and Power of the Fifth Commandment (God’s Requirement for Children of All Ages)
Is it well with your soul? The Scriptures say that being “well” and honoring your father and mother are inextricably linked. “Honor your father and mother” is the first command with a promise. It is a promise linked with spiritual and physical prosperity, including long life. Yet this foundational command is largely ignored and resented by teenagers and adults alike. As a young man Doug purposed before the Lord to make it a life goal to honor his parents. In this foundational talk, Doug addresses challenging issues like: How do wise parents instill honor in their children? What does the Bible say about the way we are to respond to perverse authority in parents? In what way are adult sons and daughters to honor their living parents? What are the consequences for dishonoring parents? How does our culture promote dishonor? Why do children who never learn to honor their parents consistently experience failure in marriage and business? How can adult children restore honor to relationships that have long been tinged by dishonor?
  • The League of Grateful Sons
Multi-generational faithfulness is a defining theme of Scripture. But multi-generational faithfulness only occurs when fathers tell and sons ask. As executive producer of the documentary, The League of Grateful Sons, Doug Phillips has just completed a four year, 23,000 mile investigative journey interviewing the fathers and sons of the Word War II generation. What he has to share about his discoveries may change the way you look at your parents and grandparents. In this power packed message, Doug explains how and why we must collect the testimonies and providences of God wrought in the lives of our fathers, and how we can encourage our elder loved ones to open their hearts and lives to this present generation of home educators. If you have ever wanted to know how to interview your grandparents or hoped to drink deeply from the life stories of your fathers, this message is for you.
  • Homeschool Vision of Christianity & Culture
Are we training our children just to get a good job and make money? There are many voices calling us in a multitude of directions. God has called us to seek His kingdom first. When we have a kingdom vision, we can address the details of life with fervor and purpose. This message will present a Biblical vision of impacting our culture for God’s glory.
  • The Blessed Marriage
Once upon a time in America children looked forward to marriage and parents actively trained their children to be good husbands and wives. Today, we live in an age in which marriage is mocked and belittled. Even within the Christian community most have embraced an unbiblical view of marriage that demeans the beauty and nobility of this holy union. Some Christian parents are compensating for the challenges in their own marriages by sending wrong messages to their children. They do this by advocating an unbiblical view that singleness is preferable to marriage. The greatest tragedy is that these children grow up unprepared for marriage, and without having ever witnessed a really positive example of biblical marriage. In this significant message, Doug outlines what the Bible teaches on marriage, offers a historical perspective on some of the great Christian marriages throughout history, and documents what the Scriptures teach about building a joyful, Christian marriage. (This is a psychology-free talk.)
  • The Visionary Father’s Role in Home Education
(The Restoration of the Biblical Family Through Father-directed Home Education)
The defining crisis of our day is the disintegration of the family. Much of this crisis can be directly attributed to the failure of men to enthusiastically embrace the responsibilities associated with their high calling as husbands and fathers. The greatest need in the homeschooling movement today is for fathers with a life vision and a burning passion for their families. In this encouraging message, Doug Phillips will discuss in very practical terms the father’s role in home education, including the biblical mandate that husbands treat their wives as beloved helpmeets, co-laboring with them on a divinely inspired mission for the Lord Jesus Christ. He will communicate a vision of the joy of fatherhood by drawing from Scripture and his own personal experience as a boy who was mentored and discipled by a loving father.
  • Making Wise Decisions about College and Life After Homeschooling
Have you ever heard the expression, “If you don’t know where you are going, any train will get you there.” This is precisely the situation most Christians find themselves in when it comes to making decisions about college. Doug Phillips examines the biblical principles that parents should consider when determining whether or not college is a wise choice for their child. The discussion includes a historical overview of the relationship between the Christian community and the university, and a hard look at the realities of both the classroom and the culture of the modern college. In this eminently practical discussion he also examines realistic alternatives to college including apprenticeship, entrepreneurial training and mentorship. Doug is currently conducting a “little experiment” in mentoring with a small cadre of dynamic home school graduates, who study 8 hours a week with him such subjects as apologetics, law, theology, and biblical worldview.

Steve and Teri Maxwell & Family

Beginning their homeschooling adventure in 1985, Steven and Teri Maxwell are the parents of eight children. Their three homeschool-graduate children are wage-earning adults while the other five children remain active homeschool students. Together Steve and Teri have authored Managers of Their Homes, Keeping Our Children’s Heart, Managers of Their Chores, and Just Around the Corner. In addition, Teri has written Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit and Steve, Preparing Sons to Provide for a Single-Income Family. For sixteen years the Maxwells have been writing monthly e-mail encouragement articles for homeschooling dads and moms that can be subscribed to for free from www.Titus2.com.

Christopher Maxwell is 26 years old and was homeschooled from 2nd grade through high school. During his teen years he started and ran a successful lawn mowing business. He now works full time with his family’s consulting business: Communication Concepts. Most of his work involves financial consulting with companies, designing web sites and photography. Christopher is the webmaster for several commercial web sites.

Sarah Maxwell is 24 years old and graduated from the Maxwell’s homeschool in 2000. She enjoys working at home managing the family’s Titus2.com ministry. Sarah has written three children’s books: A Summer with the Moodys, Autumn with the Moodys, and Winter with the Moodys. She also delights in helping her family with schooling a younger sibling and other homemaking tasks.

  • Steve Maxwell – The Homeschooling Family—Building a Vision
Whether new or experienced homeschoolers, this motivational and practical workshop helps families attain their heartfelt goals for raising and educating their children. Doubts, discouragement, and burnout can easily shipwreck the family that doesn’t know “where they are going.” What is it that keeps a family homeschooling through a mom’s feelings of being overwhelmed, a child with a rebellious spirit, or a house full of babies and toddlers? Together, Steve and Teri share in this workshop how they moved from homeschooling for convenience (we’ll try it a year and see how it goes) to homeschooling forever. They will give you concrete examples from homeschooling struggles they have experienced and how they made it through. You will appreciate their experience as they share how to keep on while still being in the trenches of day to day homeschooling.
  • Steve & Teri Maxwell – Managers of Their Chores: How Chores Facilitate the Homeschool Family
What homeschooling mom has time to teach plus do all the housework in the home? Most families agree that it is important to have their children pitch in to help with the chores. However, striving for the achievement of that goal is another matter. It often leads to conflict, guilt, and failure. In this session, the Maxwells discuss a biblical basis for chores, the multitude of benefits chores bring, inherent pitfalls of chore implementation, and how to make chores as stress-free as possible. In addition, you will be introduced to a new concept in a chore system, developed by the Maxwells after many years of failure with other chore plans. From preschoolers to teens, each person can be a contributing member of the family while gaining life-long personal benefits that prepare him for life.
  • Steve Maxwell – Family Devotions: Here’s How…Guaranteed!
Tried them and failed? Never tried because you knew it would be too big of a battle? No time for them even if you wanted to? Do any of these questions describe your experience with family devotions? Join Steve Maxwell as he shares about the Maxwell family’s favorite time of their day. Steve will give practical advice for achieving success in family devotions that he guarantees will work.
  • Steve Maxwell – Preparing Sons to Provide for a Single Income Family
Homeschooling families are often concerned about whether their sons will be adequately prepared to earn sufficient income for a one-income family. Beginning with age three and working up, Steve shares specific ways a parent can start equipping a son with the character and skills needed to be a successful single-income wage earner. Learn these principles from a dad whose twenty-four-year-old homeschooled son purchased a home debt free a year before his marriage, and whose second son is financially able to do the same. This session has also been very helpful for parents of daughters.
  • Steve Maxwell – Manager of His Home: Practical Suggestions for the Homeschooling Dad

A dad often holds the key as to how successful his wife is in homeschooling and maintaining a schedule. Being the head of a Christian family is a task that requires prayer, time, and effort. When a wife begins bringing problems to her husband, she desires a listening ear, comfort, direction, and help. In this workshop you will be given practical, biblical suggestions for how you can support and facilitate your wife in her role as a homeschooling mom. Often there is no better way to convey your love for your wife.
  • Steve Maxwell – Keeping Our Children’s Hearts
This topic represents perhaps the greatest challenge every homeschooling parent faces. We want not only to educate our children academically but also to come through the homeschooling years with children who have become mature Christian men and women living their lives for Jesus Christ. Steve and Teri together share what they have gleaned from Scripture and applied in their home, as they have raised three children, now in their twenties, who never rebelled. They are applying the same principles with the younger five. This is a powerful session presenting exciting information that is vital to successful homeschooling.
  • Teri Maxwell – Manager of Their Homes: Practical Suggestions for the Homeschooling Mom
Universally, homeschooling moms face a daunting task as they fit school into already busy days. In this workshop, Teri shares practical, proven time-management methods from her book Managers of Their Homes: A Practical Guide to Daily Scheduling for Christian Homeschool Families. As a homeschooling mom since 1985 with eight children, the Lord has taught Teri these simple, but workable solutions to the difficulty homeschooling moms have of “getting it ALL done.” Gain new hope as you hear results from moms who have applied these methods. They have moved from chaos, stress, and disorganization to peace, contentment, and productivity. You can as well!
  • Teri Maxwell – Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit
The desire of a homeschooling mother’s heart is to have a meek and quiet spirit instead of the negative emotions she often experiences. Because Teri has walked the homeschooling path since 1985, she understands first-hand the struggle. She gives practical insights into gaining a meek and quiet spirit that any mom can take and apply to her individual circumstances. Teri transparently shares how God has brought her through her struggles with depression, anger, discouragement, and fear.
  • Christopher and Sarah Maxwell – How to Start, Run and Build Your Own Business
During their teen years, homeschool students have incredible opportunities to start, run, and build successful businesses. You will not only be earning income but also learning invaluable life skills. In this practical workshop, given by a brother and sister team, Christopher (26) and Sarah Maxwell (24) share how you can start your own business. Both Christopher and Sarah have real-life experience with a variety of businesses. The workshop will cover issues such as: What type of business should you start or avoid? What are the legal and tax ramifications? What skills do you need and how do you acquire them? Plus much more. You’ll come away with specific ideas – and hopefully a big dose of motivation – to start your own business! Don’t waste your teen years – do something beneficial! (This session is popular with parents as well!)
  • Christopher Maxwell – Success or Failure? Young Men, Where Are You Headed?
Homeschooled young men have incredible potential for success in their lives – both spiritually and vocationally. However, there are tragic pitfalls to be avoided, though they might appear innocuous on the surface. In addition, there are basic elements crucial for success in both the spiritual world and business world. The goal of this workshop is to explore how the different aspects of a young man’s life will affect his future.
  • Christopher Maxwell – Family Evangelism: Effectively Sharing Christ and Loving It
Charles Spurgeon once said, “Have you no wish for others to be saved? Then you are not saved yourself. Be sure of that.” While many believers might have a deep desire to see others saved, they aren’t actively sharing their faith. From overcoming fear, to studying how Jesus witnessed to the lost, to the missing ingredient in modern evangelism, this workshop is designed to equip, motivate, and encourage you! You’ll hear real life examples that resulted from everyday opportunities – opportunities that you can also experience. Transform your desire to share into reality!
  • Sarah Maxwell – Experiencing the Joys of Young Womanhood
Young ladies, what are your goals in life? Are you waiting for something to happen? Courtship? Marriage? An exciting opportunity? Sarah shares truth from Scripture and true-life testimonies about the importance of seeking God’s will for your life and resting in Him. She gives practical applications to joyfully serving the Lord. This workshop is best suited for young ladies thirteen on up, but younger girls and mothers are welcome.

Brian Ray

Brian Ray is founder and president of the National Home Education Research Institute. A former secondary teacher in public and private schools and college professor on both undergraduate and graduate levels, he holds a Ph.D. in science education, an M.S. in zoology, and a B.S. in biology. He is a leading international expert with regard to home education research. Dr. Ray executes and publishes research, speaks to the public, testifies before legislators, and serves as an expert witness in courts. Brian and his wife Betsy are the veteran homeschooling parents of eight children, two of whom are married.

  • Swimming Upstream, The Water Gets Clearer: Why You Should Continue to Homeschool
Many parents finally fall prey to their own insecurities and critics’ darts when their children reach age 14 (and sometimes much earlier). They consider abandoning home-based and parent-guided education. The cacophonous voices of professionals, generations of institutional schooling, “public” school giveaways and enticements, personal misperceptions of reality, and the world’s opinion about what is important muddy the waters. Getting closer to the sourced – the headwaters – brings refreshment and clarity to vision and action. Dr. Ray focuses on key educational goals and philosophy (biblical), research findings, the importance of separating the state from education, and personal experience to inform, encourage, and rally parents’ spirits and harden their resolve to continue homeschooling for the long term in order to reap the harvest of its excellent fruits.
  • Just the Facts, Ma’am: Homeschooling Works
In spite of what logic and professional educators might tell you, homeschooling works. Even parents with only a high school education and low incomes help their children excel with home-based education. Dr. Ray, one of the world’s leading homeschool researchers, makes this engaging and fact-filled presentation as he reviews research on homeschooling and documents the findings of his own multiple studies. Resoundingly, research shows positive outcomes (e.g., academic achievement and social development) from home education. Learn about homeschooling and inform others.
  • When a Free Lunch Isn’t Free: A Look at Public School/ Homeschool Programs
Lures abound to sidetrack homeschooling parents. One is the fast-growing nationwide promise of “free,” state-run, “home” school programs to “help” you educate your children. Dr. Ray will challenge you to consider the paramount importance of who should be in authority over what is taught to the minds and hearts of children. Related to tax-funded programs, there are (1) subtle and negative practical consequences of enrolling your children in them, (2) serious problems from the perspective of a liberty-loving republic such as the U.S., and (3) contradictions to a biblical worldview that demands parents and private associations be the main educators of children. Dr. Ray is convinced this is one of the most urgent issues that homeschoolers should grapple with during the next several years.
  • Home Educated & Now Adults: Were the Criticisms True or False?
Dr. Ray’s major new study examines the lives of 7,306 adults from across the United States who were homeschooled. This research, a long time in the making, focuses on these adults’ general demographics, attitudes toward their own home-education experience, and success in life. Success was evaluated with respect to civic, social, educational, employment, and worldview traits. In many ways, they are very “normal.” On the other hand, they are remarkably different than the general U.S. population. Generally speaking, the findings defuse many of the long-held negative criticisms of those who doubted homeschooling’s benefits, whether practiced in the U.S. or in other nations. And the findings will likely be a great encouragement to those parents and advocates of home-based education over the past two decades.
  • Ensuring Scientific Literacy
Dr. Ray will examine the nature of science, define “scientific literacy,” explain what should be done to ensure that children have a variety of true science experiences, offer practical tips about “doing science,” and extend encouragement to home education parents that they can in fact be excellent teachers of science.
  • Are You About to be Co-opted: Separating School and State!
“Hi, we are the local government school district and we are here to help you, to give you a free education for your children at home.” Does this positively grab you and comfort you that now all your money and self-doubt worries are over? Or does it send shivers up your spine with visions of Big Brother? It is of paramount importance for everyone to consider who should be in authority over what is taught to the minds and hearts of children. Both the concept of a democratic republic such as the United States and a Judeo-Christian worldview demand that parents and private, thoughtfully-chosen associations be the only educators.
Dr. Ray will challenge you to think through this issue and consider questions such as, Should one person take from another, with the governments help, to educate his or her own children? Shouldn’t we as Christians care about those less fortunate and back up the government’s benevolent hands? And Dr. Ray will provide you with information and insight that will help you promote the concept of liberty and biblical thinking by way of separating the government from education. This has emerged as one of the most important issues with which homeschoolers must grapple during the early 2000s.

Dick & Dorothy Karman

Dick and Dorothy Karman began home educating their children in 1983. In 1984 they became leaders of a Portland-based support group. Because of their involvement in Christian homeschooling in Oregon, they were asked to establish a state-wide organization in 1986. Today, their adult children are all walking with the Lord. Dick & Dorothy continue to minister to Christian home educators by teaching parents across the Northwest, chairing the 20 year old Oregon Christian Home Education Association Network and serving as treasurer for the National Alliance of Christian Home Education Leadership.

  • Dorothy Karman – Getting Started: The First Steps to Christian Homeschooling
You’ve decided to homeschool – or maybe you’re just considering it. Where do you start? How do you know what to teach? How do you organize your day and get everything done? Learn some of the “hows” and “whys” of homeschooling from a homeschool veteran with over 20 years experience.
  • Dorothy Karman – What You Need to Know When Choosing Curriculum
Are you confused by all the curriculum choices available for your homeschool? Do you know the difference between A Beka and Alpha Omega? Do you know what the “literature based” or the unit study approach to homeschooling is? Come learn how to make sense of the myriad of choices, and how to make God-honoring decisions when you are choosing curriculum.
  • Dick Karman – Opportunity, A Higher Calling, and a Dull Ax
Sometimes families start homeschooling with few or no expectations. Moms are trying to get through another week, the children are trying to make it until 3 o’clock, and Dads are making themselves scarce because they are out of their comfort zone. If this sounds familiar, come hear lessons from God’s Word that will help you escape these pitfalls.
  • Dick Karman – Fathers, Are You Holding a Finish Line or a Stumbling Block?
Society today has degraded and devalued the role of father to the point that Christian men have lost the vision to be a loving leader to their wives and a God-fearing example to their children. Fathers are called to be leaders. It is God’s plan. Run the race with patience, and pass on the baton of leadership to your sons. Show your daughters what a good husband looks like in the way you lead your family and love your wife.

Bryan Pollock

Bryan Pollock is a homeschooling father of eight children, ranging in age from 17 years to 18 months, and the pastor of Pilgrim Bible Church which currently meets for worship in University Place near Tacoma. • Taming the Tyrant: Biblical Solutions to the Problem of Anger
In the oftentimes pressure cooker world of homeschooling, the temptation to give way to the steamy blasts of anger can be great. But God has given in His Word practical ways to “turn down the heat” within, even when the pressures rise around us!
  • Leading Our Children to Christ
Raising Godly children presupposes their prior conversion to faith in Christ. But what is the parents’ role in this vital matter? This workshop will explore Biblical principles on the spiritual Shepherding of our children, especially as it relates to their salvation.

Tim Roth

Tim Roth and his wife, Ruth, began their homeschooling journey nineteen years ago and are the proud parents of seven sons and two daughters. • Winning Battles Before They Are Fought: Effective Prayer in the Home
The success of leadership in the home hinges on the consistent use of the most powerful tool God has given you – PRAYER. Without a firm grip on this, there cannot be effective Christian parenting in your home.

Tom Steffen

Over the last eleven years, Tom Steffen has taught Biblical Worldview to people in seven countries and twelve U.S. states. With his wife, Sheila, he lives in rural Oregon, among four generations of extended family, raising his children Levi, Hannah, Abigail, Ellie and Rebekah. As a husband, homeschool father and self-employed graphic designer – Tom seeks to live out the Biblical worldview and help others do the same.

  • Unsquish Your Mind: Is Worldview in the Bible?
Are all these books, videos, camps and reading lists that emphasize worldviews merely the latest fad, or do they address an area of education that is critical for you and your children? Come examine our firm foundation – God’s Word. We’re leading a topical tour of the Bible and showing that long before Cornelius Van Til and Francis Schaeffer – pickles, dragons, and the Macedonian phalanx were illustrating the importance of a Biblical worldview.
  • Redeemed Hearts, Babylonian Brains: Catching a Contagious Worldview
Hear how God used fasting Koreans and a dramatic healing to redeem one public-school-survivor’s brain and launch his family into the adventure of homeschooling. In this session we introduce the concept of worldview, examine the impact basic assumptions have on our daily lives, and demonstrate a new graphics-based-system for learning worldview. Recognizing different worldviews is easier than you think. Come be encouraged to “love the Lord your God with all of your mind.”
