Ken Ham
The president/CEO and founder of Answers in Genesis-U.S. and the highly acclaimed Creation Museum, Ken Ham is one of the most in-demand Christian speakers in North America. Ham, a native Australian now residing near Cincinnati, Ohio, is the author of numerous books on the book of Genesis, the accuracy and authority of the Bible, dinosaurs, and the destructive fruits of evolutionary thinking (including his new co-authored book Already Gone on why so many young people are leaving the church, a hard-hitting book on the “races” and racism, Darwin’s Plantation, and the bestseller, The Lie: Evolution). He appears frequently on American TV (in one year alone: Fox’s The O’Reilly Factor and Fox and Friends in the Morning, CNN’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, ABC’s Good Morning America, the BBC radio/TV, etc.).
Ken hosts the daily radio program, “Answers … with Ken Ham,” heard on more than 800 stations in America (and dozens more overseas) and is one of the editors and contributing authors for AiG’s Answers magazine (a biblical worldview publication with over 70,000 worldwide subscribers). The high-tech Creation Museum near the Cincinnati Airport — which attracted 719,206 visitors (and several of the world’s major media) in its first two years of operation—was Ken’s brainchild.

Since graduating from his homeschool and then serving as student body president of a large west coast university, he has gone on to other leadership positions in corporate management, church, and other non-profits. Kevin has 35 years of experience in the homeschooling movement and serves as the Director of Generations with Vision – a ministry he founded to strengthen homeschool families around the country. Kevin also served as the Executive Director of Christian Home Educators of Colorado from 1998-2009, and still works actively with CHEC in his work with Generations with Vision. He has also authored several popular books for homeschoolers, including Upgrade-10 Secrets to the Best Education for Your Child, Second Mayflower, the Family Bible Study Guide Series, Christian Classics Study Guide, and others. - Friday Workshop:
#1011-What to do with Boys Ages 15-25
Forty years ago, 70% of men reached manhood by 30 years of age. Now, a bare 33% of men would meet the qualifications of maturity. For men who are 25-35 years of age, they earn less than women, and their earnings have dropped 20% adjusted for inflation since 1970. Can we expect anything better for the young men we are raising in our homes today? Kevin Swanson addresses the most serious social problem facing our nation as well as the homeschooling movement in this talk. How do we take a 15 year old boy and make a man out of him? If you have a son, this talk is for you! - Friday Afternoon Workshop:
#1023-“How to Choose a Christian Curriculum
Unit studies. Charlotte Mason. Classical. Textbook. Amidst the cacophony of curriculum choices, Kevin Swanson gives a thumb nail sketch of what is really important when choosing a curriculum for your family. Keeping God’s priorities in the forefront, he will point out the strengths represented by different educational methodologies, and encourage parents to make the best choice according to the individual needs of the family and student. - Friday Workshop:
#1031-Child Training in the Homeschool: 99% of the Job
Biblically speaking, the education of children is far more than books and tests. Character training of our children is the foundation of successful child-raising whether we aim for success academically, spiritually, or in any other area. In this powerful, fast-paced survey of character training, Kevin lays out a vision that will help parents understand and undertake the beautiful job of child-training. - Friday Family Night KEYNOTE:
#1003-b-“The Heart of Homeschooling”
Eventually, every homeschooling parent realizes that the heart of the child is the heart of the Homeschool. In this transparent and powerful presentation, Kevin traces a developing relationship between himself and his own son. Kevin drills into the heart of what happens in a home when parents begin to walk with their children. Parenting and home education boils down to one issue – the heart of a parent connecting with the heart of a child. - Saturday Morning KEYNOTE:
#1004 – “Homeschooling – Capturing the Vision!”
What is it about home education that has profoundly reenergized education and produced such outstanding academic results? Incredibly, the average Homeschool 8th grader without teacher-credentialed parents tests 4 grade levels above the national average on nationally standardized tests. And it is not because we have taken a public school system complete with desks and bolted them to the floor of our living rooms. In this visionary, ground-breaking presentation on the Homeschool vision, Kevin presents the basic elements that make up an outstanding homeschooling experience for your child. This message will give the first-time homeschooler confidence and vision and will provide encouragement and a reality check for the experienced home educator. - Saturday Morning Workshop:
#1043 – “The Heart of Fatherhood”
Here is a rousing call for renewing the involvement, relationships, and powerful influence of fatherhood. In many ways, fatherhood is a lost art. Kevin comes to this presentation with the blessing of having received a great legacy of four generations of godly fatherhood. It is more than leadership, responsibility, and relationships. It is a generational vision that renews families, reforms cultures, and establishes family dynasties. Dads, get ready for a huge encouragement and uplifting vision from this presentation - Saturday Afternoon Workshop:
#1061 – “Raising Beautiful Women of God”
As a father of four beautiful young ladies, Kevin Swanson shares the peculiar challenges and joys that face the homeschool parent in raising these little women for God. He carefully paints a picture of virtuous womanhood found in the glorious, biblical images of cornerstones, fruitful vines, and lifted horns. While cautioning parents to avoid the traps of egalitarianism and narrow caricatures of biblical principle, Kevin will present the beautiful biblical balance of economic complementarianism and family unity.
featured & workshop speakers
Dr. Brian & Betsy Ray
Brian D. Ray, Ph.D. founded the the National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI.org) in 1990 as a 501©3 non-profit research organization, and is the president of the institute. He holds his Ph.D. in science education from Oregon State University, his M.S. in zoology from Ohio University, and his B.S. in biology from the University of Puget Sound. Dr. Ray has been a middle school and high school classroom teacher in both public and private schools, an undergraduate college professor, and a university professor at the graduate level. He is a leading international expert with regard to homeschool (home school, home education) research. Dr. Ray executes and publishes research, speaks to the public, testifies before legislators, and serves as an expert witness in courts.
Brian & Betsy reside in Salem, Or, are veteran home educators of their eight children, and are now grandparents, as well.
BRIAN’S WORKSHOPS:
- Homeschooling: Essential to the Natural Family
Twenty years of research and a pro-family worldview show that parent-led, home-based education (i.e., homeschooling) is an essential function of the natural family, and that homeschooling clearly builds, strengthens, and advances the natural family (i.e., a husband/man, wife/woman, and children). On the other hand, institutional schooling, both state-run (public) and private, inherently undermine the natural family and the benefits that it bestows on society. Research on the worldwide modern homeschool movement will be reviewed showing the academic, psychological, social, familial, civic, and long-term advantages that homeschooling gives to individuals, local communities, and to societies. Theory, research findings, and common sense maintain that homeschooling values parenting, increases family time, establishes a strong morality, enhances fertility, clarifies sexual identity, decreases several social ills (e.g., sexual promiscuity, sexually transmitted diseases, abortion), and reduces taxation. The audience will learn much about homeschooling, especially as it pertains to the natural family. - When a Free Lunch Isn’t Free: Public School Homeschool Programs
“Hi, we are the local government school district and we are here to help you, to give you a free education for your children at home.” Does this positively grab you and comfort you that now all your money and self-doubt worries are over? Or does it send shivers up your spine with visions of Big Brother? It is of paramount importance for everyone to consider who should be in authority over what is taught to the minds and hearts of children. Both the concept of a democratic republic such as the United States and a Judeo-Christian worldview demand that parents and private, thoughtfully-chosen associations be the only educators.
Dr. Ray will challenge you to think through this issue and consider questions such as, Should one person take from another, with the governments help, to educate his or her own children? Shouldn’t we as Christians care about those less fortunate and back up the government’s benevolent hands? And Dr. Ray will provide you with information and insight that will help you promote the concept of liberty and biblical thinking by way of separating the government from education. This has emerged as one of the most important issues with which homeschoolers must grapple during the early 2000s. - What Makes You Think You Can “Teach Your Own”?
Dr. Ray will first ask “Should you teach your own children?” then proceed to help his audience answer the question which is the title of this message. Brian will use Christian thought, his experience as a long-time home education father of eight children, ideas from the education profession, and research to stimulate, challenge, and encourage both veteran and novice home educators. - So Now He’s a Teenager: Why Continue to Homeschool?
Many parents finally fall prey to their own insecurities and critics’ darts when their children reach age 14 (and sometimes much earlier). They consider abandoning home-based and parent-guided education. The cacophonous voices of professionals, generations of institutional schooling, “public” school giveaways and enticements, personal mis-perceptions of reality can shake the confidence of even the most convinced home educator. Dr. Ray focuses on why one should home educate teenagers by examining key educational goals and philosophy (biblical), research findings, the importance of separating the state from education, and personal experience to inform, encourage, and rally parents’ spirits and harden their resolve to continue homeschooling for the long term in order to reap the harvest of its excellent fruits. - Dr. Brian & Betsy Ray – Loving and Leading
Husbands and fathers, it is time to love and lead ? now. Like Christ loves the church. Wives and mothers, it is time to love your husband as God has declared. Nurture and admonish your children but do not provoke them. Is all of this possible? Yes. But what can you do? Brian and Betsy will give you pointed challenges, down-to-earth examples, laughter, and practical ideas to see your marriage grow from glory to glory in God’s good and exciting will. They will help and encourage you with scripture, their experiences, and what they have learned during 30 years of marriage and the upbringing of eight children.
BETSY’S WORKSHOPS:
- What Do You Do All Day, Dear?
This is for all the other moms who have been futilely asking for a maid every year for Christmas. How do you do more than is humanly possible (which most of us are trying to do) or justify not doing it (which is an easily-acquired skill!)? You will be challenged to determine priorities as you seek to organize your time. - Parents: Igniting the Fires of Your Mind
We all want our children to be excited about learning. That excitement can be caught from parents who are challenging themselves in new areas. Betsy will give ideas and relate her experiences that could make teaching more than just getting through the textbooks. She will encourage you to stimulate your thinking and give practical tips on how to relate topics in which you never thought you would be interested (e.g., economics) to ones that you have always loved (e.g., history) and to the light of God’s truth. You can lead your young people in making these relationships, forming a biblical worldview, and renewing their minds to impact their world. (Oriented to mothers)

Our world is in desperate need of leaders that speak truth! Homeschool debate trains students to analyze arguments, think critically, speak persuasively, and practice these skills all in a Christian environment. At this workshop, you’ll learn about the types of debate, see a mini-debate, and work in groups to evaluate arguments.
“SUPPORT GROUP SUPPORT” SESSIONS —Dick Karman, Oregon’s OCEANetwork
Dick & Dorothy Karman, parents of two and grandparents of four homeschooled grandchildren, have been state and national homeschooling leaders for the past 25 years. They serve on the boards of OCEANetwork and the National Alliance for Christian Home Education Leaders, speak at conferences across the country, and minister selflessly to the homeschooling community. Dick & Dorothy and the OCEANetwork have been a continual help and support to CHRISTIAN HERITAGE since its founding, and the Karmans, with their son Rob, have served as our on-site recording and duplication directors at each annual conference and at other CH events.
- #1034 – “The Role of the Support Group in Family Discipleship”
The secret ingredient that lies at the heart of homeschool success also lies in the foundation of the modern day support group: Home education isn’t a method of academic achievement; it is a way of life. If you wonder what role a support group might play in your homeschooling success, bring your notebook and your shock absorbers. Success isn’t measured by the stock market or popularity ratings. For the Christian homeschooling parent, it is measured by progress toward God’s design for your family - #1045 – “Tools for Christian Support Group Leadership”
Dick Karman shares wisdom from his 25 years of experience as a state and national homeschool leader. Whether you are just starting, carrying on, or picking up the pieces from a struggling support group, Dick provides helpful tools for ministering to local homeschoolers: setting goals; planning your year, measuring progress; establishing qualified leadership and effective leadership transfer, and more. Come and gain valuable insight into the pitfalls and the blessings of Biblical leadership in the homeschool community.
