FEATURED & WORKSHOP SPEAKERS:
Scott & Deborah Brown
Scott Brown Family-(see larger photo)
Scott & Deborah Brown have been married for 25 years and are the proud parents of four children and two grandchildren! They reside in Wake Forest, North Carolina, where their home has been fondly dubbed a “hospitality machine,” enveloping their many visitors with spiritual refreshment, comfort and love. Scott graduated from California State University in Fullerton in History and received a Master of Divinity from Talbot School of Theology. He currently serves as the director of the National Center for Family Integrated Churches. He is also a teaching elder at his church and devotes much of his time to speaking on fatherhood, church reformation and strengthening the family.
SCOTT:
- Family Worship
God has appointed the home as the primary place where children are brought up in “the training and admonition of the Lord.” This session shows the biblical basis for family worship, explains the details for how it can be done, and casts a vision for family life lived for the glory of God. - Helping Them Choose: Biblical Thinking About Courtship & Marriage ~ Part 1
This two part series begins in Genesis 24 where we find a wonderful example of family life where a visionary father sets the criteria for the selection of a wife for his son, and he dispatches his most trusted advisor to find her. What can we learn from Abraham’s example for guiding our own sons and daughters in marriage? In this message, Scott Brown brings out the issues this story raises and comes with biblical principles to guide parents and their children in this important matter. - Helping Them Choose: Biblical Thinking About Courtship & Marriage ~ Part 2 (Lunchtime Roundtable Discussion-Recorded)
The second session identifies the trials and tribulations which may await those who assist in the marriage of their sons and daughters. Some experience “light afflictions” while others have great tumult. Others may seem to breeze through the process without a hitch. But wherever you are on the continuum, there will be some challenges. Why is it such a minefield? Fortunately, the answers to these questions also lead us to the solutions. - How Fathers Help Their Sons to Maximize Their Years of Youth
We live in an age where massive amounts of time, energy and money are poured into a culture of entertainment, amusement, games and sports. The investments in these areas are absolutely astonishing. In this message, Scott will explore how fathers help their sons to maximize their time for the glory of God, redeem the time and prepare themselves for marriage and the great battles of manhood that lie ahead. - How the Church & Family Are a Blessing to One Another
The home cannot be understood apart from the church, for the home is a discipleship community that mirrors many functions of the church. Nor can the church be understood apart from the home, for the church is a household. In this message, Scott Brown lists fifteen ways the family is a nursery for the church. The home is designed to be a nursery of the church, for it fills the church with people who have been affected by the beauty created there. There is a complementary pattern for family and church life. The biblical architecture of the church of God brings families together and every aspect of the design is meant to declare the glory of God from one generation to the next. - Protecting Your Daughters
The Bible makes it clear that God has established an unbroken line of protection for women from cradle to the grave. In this message, Scott Brown will identify the various seasons of life that God provides this protection, and focuses on how earthly fathers fit in to the plan of God for the protection of His precious daughters. - Unified Fathers & Sons Reflecting the Glory of God
The pattern for earthly fathers and sons is made in heaven. The Father and His Son Jesus Christ give us what we need to know about how earthly fathers and sons are supposed to function together. In this message, we will chart this relationship in order to cast a vision for faithful and holy father and son relationships and to probe areas of repentance and change that might be necessary for faithfulness to the heavenly vision.
DEBORAH:
- Keeping Going – Living by God’s Priorities
This session is focused on how you balance academics with special giftings, unique callings and Biblical roles. - Raising Daughters/Raising Helpmeets
How do you train your daughter for God’s glorious design? How do you help them love the way of a woman? How do you prepare them to be a blessing to a husband and children? - Preparing for Homeschooling – Obedience & Character Come First!
As with any sound structure, wise builders must start with the foundation. Homeschooling is no different. The fundamental principles that guide all of the hours of homeschooling are the subject of this session. - Home Keeping & Homeschooling on a Shoestring Budget
Everybody knows about shopping “Goodwill” and the “Tightwad Gazette.” This session will elaborate on practical matters of efficiency and economy while homeschooling. (Lunchtime Roundtable Discussion-not recorded)
Mike Riddle
![]()
Mike Riddle-(see larger photo)
Mike Riddle has been involved in creation ministry for more than twenty years. As a former world-class athlete in the multi-event decathlon, it’s not surprising that Mike is also versatile in his “creation evangelism” efforts. Not only does he speak out on the field at churches, schools and other venues, Mike also holds workshops in the new Answers in Genesis-USA facility (within the Creation Museum) in Northern Kentucky. In addition, he is helping AiG develop curriculum on the Book of Genesis. Mike holds a degree in mathematics and a graduate degree in education.
- “Apologetics 101: Answering the Challenges”
The theme of this seminar is on learning how to be a 1 Peter 3:15 Christian – have a ready answer. Many challenges are answered: How could Adam have named all the animals in one day, How could Noah fit all the animals on the Ark, How can the first three days of creation be days when the sun was not created until the fourth day, Where did Cain get his wife, and more, can we really trust the Bible…. - “Astronomy, UFOs, Science and the Bible”
This lecture takes a logical and biblical approach to investigate UFOs and other life in the Universe. Topics include: The origin of life on earth, our amazing DNA, ‘warp-speed’ and traveling long distances, and the Bible and life in the Universe. - “Cloning, Stem Cells and Life” (Most appropriate for ages 13+)
Great for teens and adults. This lecture explains the concepts of cloning and what has gone wrong. It discusses the difference between the two types of stem cells and current research. The lecture finishes by showing that the Bible and the scientific evidence confirm life begins at conception. A powerful Pro-Life talk.
This talk may not be good for ages 12 and under. I do go into the topic of abortion, but do NOT show any horrible pictures. However, I do mention what an abortion is about. ~ Mike Riddle - “God’s Amazing Creation”
An entertaining but thought provoking lecture that looks at God’s creation from the very tiny things to the very large and complex things. The evidence demonstrates that He created some incredible creatures including the dinosaurs and He did it all in six days.
Steve Riddell

PLEASE NOTE: Wade Myers needed to cancel his speaking engagement at the 09 Christian Heritage Conference due to complications following the recent birth of their 5th child. Please pray for him and his family.
Stephen M. Riddell, is the Christian homeschooling father of four daughters and grandfather of two “to-be-homeschooled” granddaughters. (His daughter & son-in-law from Kent, WA shared their testimony at the 2006 Christian Heritage Family Night.) He is a dynamic speaker, trainer, coach, manager and author with a reputation for inspiring others to greater degrees of excellence. He is considered an expert in sales and telemarketing, and is regularly sought after as a keynote speaker and seminar leader at trade shows and business conferences across nationally and internationally. His expertise includes, sales, motivation, call center design, call center management, compensation, direct marketing and hiring—getting the right people. His training and consulting clients have included many major U.S. corporations. He is also the author of the book, SELLING GENIUS…Achieving Extraordinary Sales Results With Ordinary People. Currently he & his family live in Houston, Texas and where he serves as Vice-President of Global Custom Commerce.
Mr. Riddell will be speaking during the same time slots originally scheduled for Wade Myers. His session titles, in order, are as follows:
- Essential Skills Necessary to Become a Leader – How to develop and hone these skills for your entrepreneurial venture!
Workshop B, Friday 1:15-2:15 p.m. • Auditorium C • CD # 0923
Have you ever wondered why some people succeed in business ventures but the majority fail? Steve Riddell will share a personal testimony of how a seemingly “chance” encounter with his father’s old trunk in the attic completely changed his life. Mr. Riddell’s father was a Colonel in the Air Force and went to the Officers Training Academy to prepare himself for leadership. 25 years later he would have no idea how that training would transform his son’s life and provide him with a road map for success. Mr. Riddell is successful in both corporate business environments as well as entrepreneurial ventures having run a billion dollar enterprise for Compaq to establishing one of the top consulting and training firms in the U.S. Understanding the essential skills required to develop the kind of leadership qualities for success can help you in your daily work-life, home-life and spiritual life. The failures of most businesses can usually be tracked back to a “failure” in leadership. Don’t let this happen to you! - How to Use “Selling Skills” in Everyday Life! The essential ingredient in any entrepreneurial venture
Workshop C, Friday 2:45-3:45 p.m. • Auditorium B • CD # 0932
When most people are asked the question…Do you sell?, the average response is usually a quick “no”! When asked, most people usually describe salespeople as pushy, slick, quick talking, and assertive. What they don’t realize is that “selling” is something that each of us “DO” on a daily basis. We just don’t like to think of it that way. This session will teach you how to capture the “Good” side of selling skills and use them in everyday life to your advantage. Steve Riddell will show you how he took Biblical concepts and developed the top sales training programs in the United States and Canada. These skills have been taught at some of the largest organizations in North America and earned him the “1 to 1 Innovator Award for Excellence” for his work with Ford Motor Company. He will provide you with a small set of skills that if you learn and apply will have an enormous impact on everything from finding a job to establishing a business enterprise. You won’t want to miss this exciting and life changing presentation. - Required “Influence” Skills for Entrepreneurs—Most important skills needed for any successful venture!
Workshop E, Saturday 12:45-1:45 p.m. • Room F • CD # 0956
As someone who would like to become an entrepreneur, how would you like to better understand human nature, our “hot buttons” that make responding in a given way almost irresistible? As an entrepreneur or a consumer, how would you like to know how you are being manipulated based on human behavioral tendencies, and how to defend yourself from these techniques? Steve Riddell will be covering these behavior-based techniques in this exciting and fast paced session. According to Mr. Riddell, these “hot buttons” developed as “short hand” methods of social behavior actually work for us most of the time. These behaviors can be exploited to get us to take actions that may not be in our best interest. The Bible warns us to “be on guard” against those who would attempt to deceive us.
The task of the ethical entrepreneur, sales person or organization is to use these techniques to help people take actions that are good for them. Having this knowledge carries the responsibility of using it with good moral judgment. Most people though just can’t resist the temptation to exploit others. A classic example of a technique that he shares is using a gift to obligate someone. If we receive a gift, we are socially obligated to return the favor. Followers of the Hare Krishna movement used to exploit this social response by giving flowers and books to people in airports and then asking for a donation. This proved to be an almost irresistible approach. The people would try to refuse the gift to not be obligated, but the Krishna followers wouldn’t let them.
One way to resist these techniques is to vocalize what the other person is doing. “You are trying to manipulate me into making a donation by obligating me with this gift.” The exposure can often send the “deceiver” fleeing. To get a better insight into your own behavior and the behavior of others, and to understand how to use behavioral tendencies to influence others, to be aware of when you are being influenced and resist these techniques, you don’t want to miss this session.. - Coaching for Success! How to coach anyone in business or in your family to “substantially” improve their skills and ability
Workshop F, Saturday 2:15-3:15 p.m. • Auditorium B • CD # 0962
Most parents have a very difficult time when children move into the “teenage” years. Most books on parenting deal with this issue more than any other issue facing them. The idea that just because a child turns 13 that somehow they will become rebellious is certainly false, but most Christian parents are still losing the battle. Whether in a family setting or in business, understanding how to coach someone is one of the most critical skills a person needs to learn. Knowing how to move from an “authoritarian” style of parenting to a “coaching” style can be one of the most transformative lessons for any parent. Knowing how to apply this same set of skills in a “business” context can also transform any enterprise. Steve Riddell is an expert in teaching and training business leaders, entrepreneurs and yes…even parents, on how to coach someone for “radical” performance improvement. The most amazing thing is that he will share with you the secret on how to apply the skills of coaching and have the person being coached… “enjoy” the experience. Again, based on Biblical concepts found in the life of Jesus, he will show you step by step how you can improve your relationship with those you have authority over, by becoming a “world-class” coach and in doing so, raise the standards of performance, ability, skill and loyalty of your “followers” as a result.

- Heroes: Inspiring Servant Greatness in the Next Generation
“Any nation that does not honor heroes,” said Abraham Lincoln, “will not long endure.” But ours has become a culture that redefines heroism, debunking the worthiest servant leaders of the past in favor of throw-away icons of popular culture. Young people will always seek after heroes, but we must beware: they may be the wrong ones. History is punctuated by sterling examples of true heroes, worthy of adulation and emulation. In this seminar author and teacher Douglas Bond explores the essential and inspiring role of valiant heroes from Church history in a well-ordered curriculum. - History: Teaching Truth with Fiction
Fiction is one of the most memorable ways to communicate truth. Jesus told parables, short fictional stories that communicate some of the profoundest truths. Nevertheless, some families are worried about using fiction. After all, history is all about facts, isn’t it? Isn’t fiction untrue and non-fiction true? Veteran teacher and author of more than 12 published books, Douglas Bond gives practical, hands-on guidelines on using historic fiction to inspire our children to know and love history. - Why Teach Poetry in a Post-Poetry World?
For centuries poetry has been the center of literary and language studies in the Western World. But today most high school students, especially young men, think poetry is for sissies and would rather study and write anything but poetry. Author and veteran teacher, Douglas Bond offers many practical ways for teaching our young people to understand, appreciate, and write poetry, and how poetry, “the push-ups of prose,” can lead to excellent writing in all genres.

- Worldview Leadership
What is leadership? What is meant by the term “cultural leadership”? How are ideas and leadership connected? What are the starting points of leadership? Before any leadership can take place, what are the questions that leaders must answer? The purpose of this seminar is to explicate the dynamics of leadership in a Biblical Christian context. - Let’s Start Right: The Basics of the Biblical Christian Worldview
What is a worldview? What are the components of a worldview? What is the Biblical Christian worldview? The purpose of this session is to unveil the nature and structure of a Biblical Christian worldview, especially in terms of its presuppositional starting points (every point of view is a view from a point). In Biblical Christian education, if we do not start right, the end will be compromised because “the end is in the beginning.” - Mathematics: Questions & Answers
We must pose and answer two foundational questions before we can understand mathematics rightly.
(1) Where does mathematics come from?
(2) Why does mathematics work?
This seminar answers these questions in terms of the framework of Biblical revelation. - Mathematics and the Wonders of Creation
Mathematics is the signature of God in creation. This seminar explores an example of this wondrous script: The Algebra and Geometry connecting the Fibonacci sequence to the Golden Ratio.

- Lights, Camera, Action!
Homeschooling provides a ripe opportunity for students to express themselves through the medium of film and video production. This fast-paced session equips emerging filmmakers with a wealth of practical tips. Whether it’s working with actors, developing story, or production and editing techniques, this session is designed to benefit both new and experienced filmmakers who wish to get more out their filmmaking endeavors. - Film, TV & My Homeschooling Family
The recent success of Christian feature films, along with a growing intrigue with filmmaking in today’s homeschooling community, leaves families with the need to make wise and purposeful decisions about the intersection of faith and film. The powerful medium of film is a wonderful tool for education and expression; harnessing it responsibly will provide parents a unique opportunity to help their children flourish.
Scott & DiAnna Brannan, of Christian Homeschool Network of Washington
Scott and DiAnna Brannan have been married twenty-three years and are the parents of two teenage children, both of whom have been homeschooled from the beginning of their schooling venture. The Brannans have served on the board of their state homeschool organization and currently are on the board and teach classes in a homeschool cooperative, which they founded. They are also the founders of the Christian Homeschool Network of Washington , whose mission it is to communicate legislative and local issues that affect homeschooling in the state of Washington. CHN is the legislative liaison to Christian Heritage.
- Washington Homeschool Law Simply Explained
Want to be informed/updated on the homeschool law? Want to know what happened in the 09 Legislative Session? This workshop covers the basics of the homeschool law and answers many of the questions that come up to new or seasoned homeschoolers. DiAnna will attempt to cover the most common questions and give you the answers you need. The best way to protect our freedoms is to know our rights under the law! - Washington’s Trojan Horse ~ Plus Showing of DVD, “Exposing a Trojan Horse”
- Government funded programs for home educators are enticing. But what price do parents pay to participate in these programs? Is there a cost to the home education movement? Are we welcoming a Trojan Horse into our midst through participation in these programs?
- Scott and DiAnna Brannan have followed these programs since 1998. They have worked with the State Auditors Office and the Joint Legislative Audit and Review committee with the investigation into the programs. They have also spent many hours educating lawmakers on the difference between independent home education and government school-at-home programs. They were able to stop legislation in 1999 & 2003 which would have allowed the spread of these programs, at one point even defunding the programs. However, in 2004 they could not stop the passage of the Virtual School law, but they were able to get key legislation added to the law to protect home education.
- Washington State is now one of the hardest hit states-with an estimated 30%of home educators joining government school-at-home programs. The government schools are attempting to redefine homeschooling as just another model of public schooling! We cannot allow this lie to spread; we must act and we must act now! Come and get informed about the history of the programs, their agenda and what we can do in Washington state to stop the spread of these programs. Together we can preserve the home education movement for future generations!
Support Group Sessions . . .
For All Interested in Attending, Starting, or Leading a Support Group
Rethinking Support Groups is the theme of these sessions. So let’s ask: When is a support group not a support group? When it undermines the very things the Bible teaches about family & training your children for God’s glory. Unfortunately, the mom-led, kid-centered, activities-driven support group often does just this. Join these sessions as we explore models that more closely fit God’s design for discipling His children. Open to all who are interested in these topics.
- Friday, Workshop A: 10:45-11:45 CD #0914
“Dads & the Home-Based Discipleship Support Group – Paradigm Shift Needed!”
For family discipleship & home education to be most biblical & effective, fathers must be involved as much as possible in the lives of their children. But they’re often not. Join us as we explore together how Support Groups might be transformed from being mom-led, kid-centered, & activities-driven to being led by dads, providing encouragement for both parents in their God-designed roles of home-based disciplers, and routinely involving whole families in well-chosen activities that foster God-glorifying discipleship and growth. - Friday, Follow Up Roundtable Discussion, 12:15-1:00
“Fathers & the Homeschool Support Group” - Saturday, Workshop F, 11:45-12:45 CD #0964
“Important Issues Facing Today’s Support Groups—and Some Ways to Address Them”
Panel Discussion • Most support groups face challenging issues that can distract them from their mission or disrupt the group entirely. Join a panel of experienced home educators as they discuss a number of common problems involving mission, leadership, membership, alternative “homeschooling options”, and more. And hear discussion on how these might be handled. Includes Q&A time.
Also consider attending the above sessions by CHN directors, Scott & DiAnna Brannan
See Conference Program pages 9-12 and Registration Packet Roundtable Discussion insert for more information on these sessions. And stop by Christian Heritage booth for free CD’s of sessions #0914 & #0964 and Support Group Leaders’ Manuals – as supplies last.

- Frustration with Phonics? Help for the Struggling Reader
If you are committed to teaching your child to read with phonics but are facing nothing but frustration and tears, you will find out why and what you can do about it. Learn about the foundational skills necessary before phonics can be utilized effectively for a child. And take home the activities to do daily to build this foundation. - Homeschooling and Autism, Sensory Dysfunction, & Other Special Needs
When Christian parents are confronted with a special needs child it often challenges their homeschooling convictions. They are faced with a daunting task of educating a child in which the typical path does not work or bring success. Lack of progress can cause doubt as to whether parents really can successfully home school their special needs children. This workshop will provide answers and understanding as to what is necessary to begin to organize the nervous system to overcome developmental roadblocks and to begin to move forward academically. - Slow Learner to Super Student: Yes, There is Hope!
When a child is learning slowly for no apparent reason—- the reason usually is a unique mixture of weaknesses in the various pathways needed for taking in, retaining, and using information. This workshop will instruct parents on how to go home and test their own child to discover exactly which things are stopping the academic progress they desire. Parents will also be given information on activities to do at home to begin to build the correct pathways to accelerate learning and development. - Unlock Your Child’s Learning Potential with Brain Development
As God created the universe in an orderly fashion so he has created each human being to develop in an orderly fashion. When events occur that interfere with, block or alter normal development the end result is often learning difficulties. The most important information a homeschooling family can learn is not about curriculum, but to discover the amazing way God has designed your child’s brain development from infancy on to organize for exceptional functioning. This session will focus on learning the important sequential developmental steps needed for superior functioning and what to do if your child has missed any of these steps.
