- Opening Keynote: “From Fear to Eternity” (Developing a Christ-centered Perspective on the Home school Adventure)”
For many, home education began as a frightening step of faith, but has quickly matured into an encouraging and holy mission to train warriors for the kingdom of God. What begins as a fearful step of faith, can, by the grace of God, culminate in a journey preparing precious souls for eternity. Doug reminds us of the true mission of the home schooling family. He encourages moms to see the high calling of their work and exhorts fathers to assume the great mantle of leadership that leads to multi-generational blessing. [Note: This speech is excellent for first time home schoolers as well as “veterans.”] - Friday Workshop: “How to Think Like a Christian”
Have you ever wondered if there is a distinctively Christian approach to teaching math, grammar, history, etc.? Doug answers these and similar questions in this important introduction to Christian apologetics and the true meaning of a biblical worldview. This talk is appropriate for adults and high school students. It is especially important that home educators understand a Christian theory of knowledge and education if they hope to train their children to “take every thought captive to the obedience of Jesus Christ.” Issues discussed include: Can academics be theologically neutral? What is the role of logic in a Christian worldview? Do facts speak for themselves? How may we defend the Bible? Lastly, how do we answer the problem of evil? - Friday Afternoon Keynote: “Victories: Moments Small and Large Which Define Christian Parenthood”
Christian parents are surrounded with beauty. But in life’s business they often fail to see the thousands of precious victories which God places in their lives as parents. In this heartwarming and inspirational message Doug helps parents to identify those victories, small and large, which truly make up the most important moments of their lives. - Family Night Keynote: “Persevero! The Indefatigable Spirit of George Washington”
George Washington is not only the single most important figure in American history, but he may be the greatest leader of the last one thousands years. His was a life of providential blessing, passionate principle and unflinching perseverance. In this spirited talk, Doug Phillips draws some of the most important lessons from the life of Washington, drawing special application for the home school community. - Saturday Morning Keynote: “Secrets of Successful Multi-Generational Visionaries”
The bible is the story of multi-generational victory and generational failure. The history of the New Testament church from the time of Christ to the present includes many similar stories. - Saturday Workshop: “Uniting Church and Family”
Within Christianity two extremes predominate. The first pits the local church against the family by segregating children from their parents and allowing youth culture to drive ministry activities. The second reacts to this crisis by rebelling against the authority of the local church. The first group has actually introduced false philosophies and evolutionary notions into their church structure, and the second has responded in frustration to what they perceive as an attack on the family. In this talk Doug demonstrates that God desires the church to become a child-friendly, father-reinforcing meeting that supports and builds family life. Similarly, the family is to grow as it places itself under the authority and shepherding of the local church. The local church is not meant to be a business, a bureaucracy, or a base for youth activities, but neither is the family meant to be an island. - Saturday Closing Keynote: “Providence and Perseverance: God’s Message of History to Our Children”
This present generation lacks hope. Our children don’t know who they are, where they came from, nor where they should be going. Psalm 78 reminds us that God has ordained the telling of providential history to children as a primary means of communicating hope to the next generation. Doug Phillips explains the doctrine of Providence and the legacy of faithful believers who have persevered. He provides parents with a practical defense of providential history against the liberal revisionists of our day and inspires home educators to make the discipline of providential history a core element of their home education.
~~~~ - Saturday “Support Team Banquet” Address: “Toxic: Seven Poisons Which Threaten The Health of the Home School Movement—and their Antidotes”
For more than a quarter of a century the modern Homeschool movement has been the subject of God’s favor and blessing. Birthed out of a principled desire to return education to it’s biblical foundations, and to encourage family revival and multi-generational faithfulness, the homeschool movement persevered through numerous trials only to emerge as one of the most hopeful and encouraging movements within the Church. But as we approach the second decade of the 21st Century, the Homeschool movement now finds itself at a cross roads. Dangerous influences have emerged which threaten to undermine the coherence, purity, and significance of the Homeschool vision. Now Doug Phillips examines seven of the most insidious poisons being absorbed into the hearts of home education and he offers the surgical solutions necessary to restore health.
- ~~Post-conference Banquet attendance by invitation only to Conference Speakers and Christian Heritage “Support Team” Members
OTHER ERBER FAMILY SESSIONS:
- “Home Education … Just One Aspect of Life!”—Roger
Of course we’re teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic, we’re home schoolers! But, are we taking full advantage of the fact that our children are home and in our presence? So much is lost to a family who simply does “school at home”. In this session Roger Erber will explore the opportunities and the life available to a family that is together. - “Fathers & Their Sons”—Roger
The father/son relationship is a critical component in the advancement of Christ’s kingdom. It is the hinge pin of the generations. Much of our culture’s struggle can be traced to this relationship being out of order. In this session you will receive practical instruction to solidly build this relationship and preserve the opportunity to influence and guide the next generation. - “Plan the Work & Work the Plan” —Roger
Is your life characterized by wandering through curriculum, putting out fires, and dealing with the need of the moment? Then probably both you and the kids are often wondering, “Where are we going, and does anyone know how to get there?” The answer may reside in simply taking time to look at the big picture and plan how to get there. This session could lead you to a future of calm confidence and a peaceful, purposeful home. - “Helps for Understanding the Why, What, & How of ‘Courtship’”—Roger
Do you have a piqued interest in courtship fueled by dating horror stories? Well, this session will help you build a perspective on courtship from the ground up. Not building a courtship structure as a reaction to evil, but following a heavenly pattern. Roger Erber will bring to this session a biblical foundation and the experience of three marriages of his children. His heart’s desire is to see the next generation of families starting on the right foot. - “Anyone Can Do This Better Than Me! Encouragement for Wives & Moms” - Maggie
Certainly anyone else can do this job better than me, you think! Come, relax, listen, and be refreshed and encouraged. Maggie has been homeschooling her eight children since 1981 and still has several years to go. She will share with us some key elements that she has come to know as being necessary to keep on keeping on as a homeschooling mom. It’s a high calling you know! - “Tips for Homeschooling a Houseful” – Maggie
Wow! Homeschooling a houseful is a full-time job! More than a full-time job!! It’s several full-time jobs! How do other moms do it? Preschool years are foundational years! Don’t overlook them! Those preschool years set the stage for future learning and relationships. In this very practical session, come hear what is important to focus in on during these years to set the stage for healthy relationships and those meatier school years ahead! - “Joyous, Purposeful Daughters at Home” - Jessica
Like any other role or relationship, being a daughter comes with its own set of responsibilities, blessings, joys, and challenges. Though we are born into this special place, and have been there ever since, it isn’t always easy to know just what we’re supposed to be doing in it! But God’s plan is perfect, and if we seek His direction, we can confidently and joyously live our days to their fullest potential. Jessica will be sharing from her heart the lessons she has learned through her years as a young lady at home. - “Support Group Leaders’ Workshop”
- “The Question of Origins””
The Question of Origins” seeks to answer the following questions. 1. What are the belief options for origins? 2. Why is there so much disagreement about origins? 3. Which side, creationism or naturalism, has more evidence? 4. Is the idea of creation against science? 5. What is the origin of the earth? In each case, the questions will be answered showing that scientific reality is in agreement with the Scriptural record. - “What About Earth History?”
There are two areas where most questions arise between creationism and naturalism. These are the question of origins, and what has happened since the beginning, or the question of earth history. An examination of some pertinent Scientific evidence will show that scientific reality matches the Biblical record for the Flood and its effects. - “The Puzzle of Ancient Man”
This talk traces the history of man from creation up to the present. The title comes from the fact that naturalism teaches that man evolved up from an animal. If that were true, then the further we went backwards in time, the more primitive ought man to be. But science shows us exactly the opposite. Ancient civilizations had a high technology even before the Flood. The Flood wiped it all out, but not the memory that it could be done. After the Flood, people began to rebuild civilization again but they did not have to reinvent the pre-Flood technology. Thus early after the Flood a high level of science and technology was again in existence. Ancient Egypt and the pyramids illustrate this. It is astounding what the evidence indicates! Surviving objects made of very hard rock show that they were carved using what we would term modern machining methods. In fact, the pyramids themselves show evidence of having been constructed using powered machinery. After Babel, people scattered widely and constructed items such as Stonehenge in the British Isles, Tiahuanaco and Sacsahuaman in South America, and the Mayan pyramids in Central America. Scientific reality agrees with the Biblical record. - “The Dinosaur Puzzle”
Science has a number of puzzles which can be answered by matching the actual facts from fossils, including modern discoveries concerning dinosaurs, with the Biblical account of origins. This session addresses common questions relating to these fascinating creatures. When did the dinosaurs live? What happened to the dinosaurs? Why don’t we have dinosaurs today, or do we? Were dinosaurs on the Ark, and if so, could some dinosaurs still be alive today? (Or do we?) Suitable for general audience.
- “What I Need to Be Prepared for Today’s Job Market”
Whether you are a seasoned individual looking for another position or are a homeschooled student preparing for your future, it is important to know what employers are looking for. This session addresses the range of issues associated with gaining employment, from discovering opportunities and researching the position to properly presenting yourself on a resume and in person during an interview. - “The Exceptional Employee & How to Become One”
“Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before unknown men.” Pr 22:29. The vast majority of the world’s workers are employees. However, not all employees perform equally. This session explores what it takes for us to learn to perform in a manner that catches the eye of both our employer and our Master—essential training for us and our homeschooled students. - “Working for God, Not for Men”
On the surface, it may seem that we work for our supervisor, the owner of the business, or the customer. Our performance often conforms to the expectations of whoever we believe is in charge. However, if we do not recognize the real Master, our work loses much of its worth. This session addresses the way for us to become and to remain truly motivated in the work our hands find to accomplish, even when we are dealing with a grumpy boss, an unjust employer, or a difficult customer. Come with your children and help them prepare for adulthood by understanding this important truth as it applies to their present and future endeavors! - “Employers Will Give Account: Characteristics of a Righteous Master”
“…Give an account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward”. Luke 16:2b Rules are made for the employees to follow, but what about the boss? Employers actually must perform to a higher standard. The world may not agree, but in God’s economy, this is so. Whether you are a small business owner, a supervisor in a large company, or an aspiring entrepreneur, you need to be aware of your responsibilities before the Lord.
